2000 : 3.0 Litre V6 and 4.0 Litre V8

When launched in in 1999 as a 2000 model, the S-Type was offered either with a Ford based 3.0 Litre V6 or with Jaguar's AJ-V8 engine and 5 speed automatic already in use in the XK8 and XJ8. While adequate performance wise, the V6 engine and its tranny lacked the refinement of the true Jaguar V8.

In the US, the S-Type was delivered in the same trim version featuring leather interior and all the bell and whistles normally found on a Jaguar. In the UK, the S-type was availble in different trim levels, some including cloth seats.

Late 2001, an S-type Sports featuring a sports suspension, larger wheels, and color coded trim was added to the line.

2003 : 3.0 Litre V6, 4.2 Litre V8 and S-Type R

In 2002, a revised version was announced by Jaguar, to debut as a 2003 Model. On the outside, the 2003 looks very similar to the previous version but the interior, engine ( now 4.2 liter), suspension and construction were heavily revised. As anticipated, an R model was also introduced, featuring the new 4.2 liter supercharged V8 mated to a ZF 6 speed automatic.

2005 : New Diesel Engine

The big news for 2005 was the introduction of a twin turbo diesel under the bonnet of the S-Type to meet the strong demand for diesels in European markets where drivers face high gas prices. For years Jaguar's competition was able to get the lion's share of the diesel market while Jaguar's range only included gas engines.
