XK Floorboards

From: Neil Skipper To: xk-lovers@honcho.ColumbiaSC.NCR.COM Subject: XK 120 floor boards Date: Monday, January 20, 1997 9:20PM

I have a templet for the plywood floor boards. I was thinking of using half inch marine plywood. I was told to use 5/8ths inch to get more support. Is there any prep work for instance heat treatment since the mufflers are below the drivers seat.

Neil -

5/8" is fine - Definately use marine-grade, or it'll self-destruct very rapidly - thickness difference un-noticeable. The original stuff had about 7 very thin plies, more than we use over here. Paint it black (all sides) before installation.

Good luck!

Neil,

Originally the 120 had a sheet metal plate retaining a piece of asbestos on the bottom side of the floor board over the muffler. I have replaced it with a piece of thermal barrier cloth. Seems to work fine. I got the cloth from Pegasus Racing Supplies in Wisc. (800-688-6946 or fax @ 800-742-0484) A 40" wide piece is $26.49 per foot.

Neil,

All XKs use 9mm ( .354") seven ply Baltic Birch plywood for the passenger floorboards and also for the boot floorboards. Baltic Birch plywood is the stongest plywood made because of its thinner mutiple plies. A muffler heat shield is attached above the mufflers on the bottom of the passenger floorboard. Originally asbestos covered with aluminum was used; it is attached with wood screws into the bottom of the floorboard. Both floor boards also have the seat anchor bolt strips attached to them underneath also. Tee nuts (threaded steel inserts)are installed where the tranmission cover screws to the floorboards. L shaped cleats ( 22 of them) and 1/4" screws attach the floorboards. I make all of the above items, including the heat shield with an asbestos substitute.

Wray E. Schelin
